Siyun Wu is a Lecturer and PhD candidate at Leiden University's Institute for Area Studies, affiliated with the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology. Her research focuses on cultural studies, critical heritage studies, and social anthropology, with regional expertise in Europe and East Asia. She explores themes such as heritage politics, national identity construction, cultural intimacy, and the intersection of media, tourism, and heritage preservation.
Education: MA in Asian Studies (specialization in History, Arts, and Culture) from Leiden University; BA in Chinese Language and Literature and a double degree in English Language and Literature from Beijing Foreign Studies University (China).
Her current research project, 'To Sing as One Nation?: Singing Tradition, Heritage Festival and Everyday Construction of National Identity in Estonia', examines the role of heritage in shaping cultural identity through the lens of Estonia's World Heritage song festival Laulupidu. Supervisors include Prof. Cristina Grasseni and Prof. Michael Herzfeld.
Wu's work addresses globalization's impact on heritage notions, nationalism, and the socio-economic dimensions of cultural practices. She investigates how heritage is actively (re)constructed to foster cultural intimacy and national belonging, particularly in contexts of indigenous identity and local development.
