Dr. Michael Hast is an Associate Professor at the University of Delaware, specializing in biomechanical and biomedical engineering. His research focuses on fracture reconstruction, bone regeneration, and additive manufacturing of bioresorbable implants. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, with prior roles as a Research Assistant Professor and Director of the Penn Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders Biomechanics Core at the University of Pennsylvania. His work integrates computational modeling, medical imaging, and biomechanical testing to address clinical challenges in orthopaedics.
- Education: PhD (2011), MS (2007), BS (2004) in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State.
Research interests include the interplay between mechanical and biological variables in bone healing, development of novel implants using additive manufacturing, and non-invasive assessment techniques such as activity tracking and MRI-based finite element analysis. His lab collaborates across orthopaedics, dentistry, and medicine to advance musculoskeletal tissue engineering.
Recent articles highlight advancements in 3D-printed implants, bioresorbable materials, and MRI-FEA integration for bone assessment. His work emphasizes translational applications, including outreach programs to engage high school students in orthopaedic science.
Dr. Hast’s collaborations span biomechanical modeling, material characterization, and clinical trials. His lab develops patient-specific solutions using hybrid additive manufacturing techniques and explores degradation kinetics of implant materials under physiological loads.
