Xiaowei Sherry Liu

Xiaowei Sherry Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. She holds dual leadership roles as Director of the McKay MicroCT Imaging Core and Co-Director of the McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory. Her educational background includes a B.E. in Bioengineering and Instrumentation from Tsinghua University (2002), and M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Columbia University (2004–2007).

Dr. Liu's research encompasses bone biomechanics, skeletal adaptation mechanisms, osteoporosis therapeutics, and advanced orthopaedic imaging techniques. Her work investigates topics such as fracture healing, radiation-induced bone loss, reproductive impacts on bone structure, and computational analysis of trabecular microarchitecture.

Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on bone quality assessment, therapeutic interventions for bone diseases, and biomechanical responses to physiological stressors. Key methodologies include micro-CT imaging, preclinical rodent models, and molecular pathway analysis.

Dr. Liu leads the McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory and coordinates the MicroCT Imaging Core for the Penn Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration in musculoskeletal science.
