Dr. Michael Hartnady is a Research Fellow at Curtin University's School of Earth and Planetary Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on the formation and evolution of Earth's continental crust, deformation mechanisms in the lithosphere, and the tectonic history of ancient orogenic belts. He holds a PhD from Curtin University and completed his Honours and Master's degrees at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he received prestigious awards including the Corstorphine Medal and John Handley Award for exceptional thesis work.
His research integrates field and structural mapping, microstructural analysis, and cutting-edge geochronology techniques such as U-Th-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes. Current projects investigate the evolution of Earth's first continents using Pb isotopes in K-feldspar from Australian cratons. He is a member of the Geological Societies of South Africa and Australia and contributes to global debates on continental crust formation and mantle dynamics.
Key scientific achievements include developing the Albany K-Feldspar Pb isotope reference material and advancing methodologies for interpreting Pb isotope systems. His publications span topics from continental rifting to impact-driven hydrothermal alteration, reflecting his expertise in linking microscale mineral analysis to large-scale tectonic processes. He collaborates widely, appearing in high-impact journals like Nature Communications and Geology.
