Andrew Smye is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University, specializing in processes governing the chemical and physical evolution of Earth's continental crust and uppermost mantle. His research integrates field observations, analytical techniques, and theoretical modeling to address questions about heat and mass transport, metamorphism's role in volatile cycles, and craton dynamics.
- Research Focus: Continental rifting initiation (Rio Grande Rift), exhumation of high-pressure metamorphic rocks (Voltri Massif), lower crust formation (Ivrea-Verbano Zone), noble gas systematics in subduction zones, fluid transport mechanisms (Eastern Alps), and U-Pb thermochronology in rutile.
- Techniques: Laser ablation ICP-MS, electron microprobe analysis, phase equilibria calculations, numerical modeling.
Current projects explore thermal evolution of continental lithosphere, geodynamic modeling of extension-related metamorphism, and Pb mobility in rutile from Slave craton xenoliths.
