Itohan I Osayimwese is the Chair and Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture at Brown University, with affiliations in Africana Studies and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Her research focuses on colonial architectural histories, particularly German colonialism's impact on Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean. She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and has held fellowships at institutions including MIT and Wellesley College.
Her major works include Colonialism and Modern Architecture in Germany (2017), German Colonialism in Africa and its Legacies (2023), and an upcoming book on African cultural heritage displacement. Her research bridges architectural history with postcolonial theory, emphasizing decolonial methodologies and global architectural networks.
Osayimwese has received prestigious awards including the Schelling Prize for Architectural Theory (2020) and the SAH/Mellon Author Award. Her teaching focuses on African diaspora architecture, urban studies, and decolonizing space. Her funded projects explore topics like postcolonial development aid in West Africa and the architectural history of migration in Barbados.
