Michael H. Posner is the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business, and Director of the Center for Business and Human Rights—the first such center at a business school. He joined NYU Stern in 2013 after serving as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor under President Obama (2009–2013). Prior to that, he led Human Rights First (1978–2009), a New York-based advocacy organization.
Posner’s expertise spans human rights law, corporate accountability, and national security ethics. He played a pivotal role in drafting the Refugee Act of 1980 and the Torture Victim Protection Act. His career includes teaching at Yale and Columbia Law Schools and advising on global initiatives like the Fair Labor Association and the Global Network Initiative.
His research focuses on aligning business operations with human rights standards, particularly in sectors like mining, technology, and apparel. He has testified before Congress dozens of times and frequently critiques threats to democracy and human rights under contemporary political leadership.
