Michael Gavin

Dr. Michael Gavin is a Lecturer in International Relations at the School of Political Science & International Studies, University of Queensland. He specializes in the international and comparative political economy of finance, with research examining how politics shapes monetary policy, central banking, and the global financial safety net.

Dr. Gavin's research program focuses on several interconnected themes:

• The politics of IMF lending and central banking in emerging and developing economies
• How populist leaders pressure independent central banks and whether these pressures succeed
• The historical evolution of central banks and their founding purposes
• The fragmented nature of the global financial safety net and its inequitable coverage
• The relationship between central bank independence and financial stability during crises

His publications reveal a consistent focus on the intersection of politics and financial governance. His most recent work examines populism's impact on central bank independence, while earlier research explores the structure of global financial safety nets and the relationship between central bank independence and crisis liquidity provision. His work employs diverse methodologies including formal modeling, quantitative analysis, qualitative field work, and case study analysis. Dr. Gavin is currently working on a book project examining the politics of the IMF's lending capacity.

Dr. Gavin teaches Foundations in Politics, Policy and International Relations; Research Methods; and Economic Analysis & Public Policy at the University of Queensland. Previously, he has taught at Washington University in St. Louis and Carleton University. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto, along with master's degrees in Economics from the University of British Columbia and Political Science from Carleton University, and a Bachelor's (Honours) from the University of Western Ontario.
