Dimitri Demekas is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's School of International & Public Affairs and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE) School of Public Policy. He holds concurrent roles as a Special Adviser on financial stability at the Bank of England and a senior consultant to the World Bank Group. His expertise spans financial stability, climate finance, global governance, and fragile states.
Demekas has a 30-year career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he served as Assistant Director of the Monetary & Capital Markets Department. He revitalized the IMF's financial surveillance frameworks, managed the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP), and contributed to stress-testing methodologies. He also advised the G20, IFC, and IMF's Independent Evaluation Office on technology in finance.
His career includes roles as Special Adviser to the Greek EU Presidency (2003), leading EU-Russia and Western Balkans policy, and heading the IMF's Southeastern Europe Division. He is fluent in English, French, Greek, Italian, and Spanish.
