Michael Esterman is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, where he directs the Boston Attention and Learning Lab and co-leads the Neuroimaging Research for Veterans Center. His research employs cognitive neuroscience techniques to investigate attention mechanisms, executive function, and neuropsychiatric disorders like PTSD.
Research interests focus on:
- Basic cognitive mechanisms of attention regulation
- Neural correlates of trauma-related disorders
- Developing cognitive interventions for PTSD
- Neuroimaging biomarkers for psychiatric conditions
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on trauma responses in military populations, with recent work examining suicide cognition, emotional distraction effects, and metabolic influences on brain connectivity. Research frequently employs fMRI, behavioral tasks, and longitudinal designs.
Awards and honors:
- Spivack Emerging Leader Award (2018)
Active in graduate education as Primary Mentor of Grad Students at BU's Graduate Medical Sciences program. Leads multiple NIH-funded projects including studies on mobile social media's mental health impact and cerebellar network modulation.
Directs the Boston Attention and Learning Lab and co-leads the Neuroimaging Research for Veterans Center and Translational Research Center for TBI and Stress Disorders, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.
