Christine Elizabeth Marx, M.D., is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Professor in Neurosurgery at Duke University. She serves as Vice Chair for Faculty in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and is a Faculty Network Member of the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. Her primary clinical and research affiliations are with the VA Medical Center in Durham, NC.
Education:
- M.D., Duke University (1992)
- M.A., University of Virginia (1988)
Her research focuses on neuropsychiatric disorders, with emphasis on PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and neurosteroid mechanisms. She investigates epigenetic aging, inflammation pathways, and neuroimaging biomarkers in military veterans. Key themes include stress response modulation, neuroendocrine interactions, and translational interventions for trauma-related conditions.
Recent publications (2020-2024) demonstrate strong trends in PTSD-TBI comorbidity, neurosteroid biomarkers (e.g., allopregnanolone), and epigenetic studies in veteran cohorts. Over 80% of articles integrate neuroimaging, molecular biology, or clinical trial methodologies to explore mechanisms of stress-related disorders.
Grants and Projects:
- Duke University Psychiatry Physician-Scientist Residency Training Program (2024-2029)
- Novel Intervention for Chronic Complex TBI in Veterans (2022-2026)
- Allopregnanolone in post-stroke depression (2024-2026)
- A Neurosteroid Intervention for Menopausal Depression (2023-2025)
- Clinical Medication Development for Bipolar Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorders (2018-2023)
She collaborates extensively with the VA Mid-Atlantic MIRECC Workgroup, leading multi-site studies on military trauma, neurosteroid therapeutics, and brain aging.
