Michael Dessen is Professor and Robert & Marjorie Rawlins Chair of Music at the University of California, Irvine, where he has served since 2006. He currently chairs the Department of Music, coordinates the Jazz Program, directs the Gassmann Electronic Music Studios, and serves as core faculty in the PhD program in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology (ICIT), which he co-founded.

His research centers on interactive improvisation, telematic (networked) music performance, and intercultural exchange, exploring live electronics integration, dynamic scorestreams, and cross-border collaborations. Projects like Puentes Telemáticos / Telematic Bridges connect Latinx youth in California and Colombia through telepresent musical creation, while his scholarly work examines the Asian American creative music movement and African diasporic traditions.

Dessen supervises MFA/PhD students in composition/improvisation and has secured major research funding through his awards.
