Mari Kimura is a violinist, composer, researcher, and entrepreneur at the forefront of extending the violin's technical and expressive capabilities. She is affiliated with the University of California, Irvine (UCI) as a Professor in the Department of Music and serves as Founding Chair of the Future Music Lab at the Atlantic Music Festival since 2013. Her work bridges classical violin performance with cutting-edge technology, including her groundbreaking Subharmonics technique and the development of the MUGIC™ motion sensor.
Kimura's research focuses on interactive computer music, violin ergonomics, and real-time motion capture for musical expression. Her compositions and performances have explored collaborations with institutions like IRCAM and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, often integrating live electronics and improvisation.
