Madeleine Mitchell is a distinguished Professor of Violin at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where she has taught since 1994. She serves as a vital member of the Strings Faculty, contributing significantly to violin pedagogy and chamber music instruction. Her multifaceted career bridges academic excellence with international performance, having performed in 50 countries across major venues including Lincoln Center, Sydney Opera House, and Wigmore Hall.
Mitchell's research interests focus on expanding the violin repertoire through commissioning new works, interdisciplinary collaborations, and historical performance practices. Her creative programming explores the violin's expressive possibilities across genres and eras, with particular emphasis on British composers and contemporary music. She has premiered numerous works written specifically for her by composers including Sir James MacMillan, Michael Nyman, and John Woolrich.
Her recent scholarly output shows consistent engagement with British musical heritage, contemporary composition, and interdisciplinary approaches to violin performance. The 2024 release Howells & Wood Quartets continues her exploration of 20th century British composers, following the critically acclaimed Violin Conversations (2023) which featured collaborations with living composers.
