Kenneth Hesketh is a Professor of Composition and Doctoral Supervisor at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. His academic roles include teaching, research supervision, and contributions to the RCM’s academic and artistic missions. He holds degrees including an MMus from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), ARCM (Postgraduate) from the RCM, and a Dip RCM.
His research interests revolve around entropy, mutation, existentialism, and formal design inspired by labyrinthine pathways. These themes are reflected in his extensive compositional output, which spans orchestral works, chamber music, choral pieces, and arrangements of classical and contemporary composers like Dutilleux and Debussy.
Hesketh’s accolades include the British Composer Award (2017) for In Ictu Oculi, shortlisting for the Ivors Academy Award (2020), and the André Chevillion-Yvonne Bonnaud Foundation Prize. His works have been performed globally by leading ensembles such as the BBC Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, and Göttinger Symphonie Orchester, under conductors like Sir Simon Rattle and Susanna Malkki.
His compositional career includes over 100 works, with recordings on labels like NMC, BIS, and Chandos. Notable recent works include Ex uno plures (2024) and Carmina Tempore Viri (2021), a pandemic-themed choral piece. He supervises doctoral students like Mingdu Li and Enrica Sciandrone, guiding their exploration of modern compositional techniques and interdisciplinary themes.
Hesketh’s research also extends to musicology, as seen in his analysis of Henri Dutilleux’s Ainsi la nuit (2010). He actively engages with educational outreach through RCM’s Sparks program, promoting music appreciation and composition in schools.
