Kevin Ernste is an Associate Professor of Music at Cornell University and Director of the Cornell Electroacoustic Music Center (CEMC). He is a composer, performer, and teacher specializing in electronic and electroacoustic music, with a focus on exploring and expanding acoustic instrumental sounds through electronic and computer means.
Dr. Ernste completed his Ph.D. at the Eastman School of Music. His academic journey has established him as a significant figure in contemporary music composition, particularly within electroacoustic works that bridge traditional instrumental performance with cutting-edge technology.
Ernste's research interests center on the intersection of acoustic instruments with electronic media. His work involves deep exploration of instrumental timbres and physical properties to reveal hidden sonic possibilities, often through close collaboration with performers. Key areas include spatialized and immersive sound, field recording techniques, studio and remote recording, mixing and mastering, and microphone array design. His compositions frequently incorporate site-specific elements and conceptual frameworks that engage with environmental and social themes.
His recent compositional output demonstrates a progression toward increasingly complex integration of acoustic and electronic elements. The "Music in the American Wild" project, featuring "Interregnum," represents a significant exploration of the relationship between human-made music and natural environments. His works often engage with historical musical references while pushing technological boundaries, as seen in pieces like "Palimpsest" for the JACK Quartet and "Adwords/Edward" for Google Glass, which was commissioned as part of Google's "Glass Explorer" program.
- Fromm Music Foundation Commission (2011) for "Palimpsest" for the JACK Quartet
- Recordings released on prestigious labels including Innova Records, Equilibrium Records, and Weighter Recordings
- "CAGE | Bertoia" record release (2024) featuring improvisations on Harry Bertoia sculptures
Ernste actively collaborates with performers and ensembles worldwide through his founding role in the Cornell Avant-Garde Ensemble (CAGE). His works have been performed internationally at venues and festivals including the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), Spark Festival, Aspen Summer Music Festival, and Sweet Thunder Festival, with performances spanning from China and Austria to major festivals across the United States. His leadership extends to directing the Cornell Electroacoustic Music Center, fostering innovation in electronic music creation and performance at Cornell.
