Michael D. Kappelman

Michael D. Kappelman is a Professor of Pediatrics and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. His clinical expertise centers on pediatric gastroenterology, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children and young adults. He focuses on disease epidemiology, cost, natural history, patient-reported outcomes, and comparative effectiveness research (CER), with an emphasis on translating evidence into practice and reducing health disparities.

at UNC’s NC Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (TraCS). His research spans observational and interventional study designs, including pragmatic clinical trials and text-based messaging systems to improve patient activation.
