A. Sidney Barritt IV, MD, MSCR is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine and serves as Director of Hepatology. He is a member of the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD) and completed the Digestive Disease Epidemiology T32 training program.
Research Interests: Dr. Barritt’s work integrates clinical hepatology with epidemiologic methods to study alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and drug-induced liver injury (DILI). He pioneered the use of discrete-event simulation to forecast donor-organ availability and collaborates on translational pharmacology projects.
Publications: His 112 PubMed-indexed articles (2008-2025) span clinical trials of obeticholic acid in NASH, DILIN case series on herbal hepatotoxicity, COVID-19 liver enzyme patterns, microbiome–liver interactions, and health-services modeling.
Collaborations & Teams: He works with CGIBD investigators Barnes, Dellon, Evon, Moon, Peery, Sandler, and Shaheen, and participates in multicenter consortia such as REGENERATE, STELLAR, TARGET-NASH, and DILIN.
