معرفی
Professor Michael Cotterell is an Associate Professor in Physical Chemistry at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow in Chemistry at Corpus Christi College. He joined Oxford in September 2023, bringing expertise in laser-based spectroscopy of aerosol particles and a track record of atmospheric science research. His work bridges experimental physical chemistry with environmental applications.
- Undergraduate: Chemical Physics, University of Bristol (2008-2012)
- PhD: University of Bristol (2012-2016)
- Postdoc: University of Exeter (2016-2019)
- Current: University of Oxford (2023-present)
Cotterell's research focuses on laser-based spectroscopy of aerosol particles, particularly their optical, physical, and chemical properties. His group develops non-contact measurement techniques using optical and electrodynamic traps to study single levitated particles, collaborating with the Met Office on atmospheric instrumentation. Applications include climate modeling and understanding reaction acceleration in aerosols.
His publications highlight expertise in refractive index retrievals, photoacoustic energy transfer, and single-particle cavity ring-down spectroscopy. Methodological innovations in aerosol analysis dominate his recent work, particularly for mobility-selected and internally mixed particles.
- Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund Tom West award
- NERC Independent Research Fellowship
Cotterell supervises students and researchers in physical chemistry, with a focus on atmospheric aerosols. His lab combines experimental spectroscopy, instrument development, and collaborations with climate scientists to address challenges in aerosol characterization and environmental impact.
