Andrew Orr-Ewing is a Professor in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol and currently serves as Head of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry (since 2018). He holds a D.Phil. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Oxford (1991), with earlier degrees including an M.A. and B.A. Hons. in Chemistry (First Class, 1988) from Oxford, where he also received the Gibbs Prize for Chemistry.
- Education:
- M.A. and B.A. Hons. in Chemistry, University of Oxford (1988)
- D.Phil. in Physical Chemistry, University of Oxford (1991)
His research focuses on chemical dynamics, including gas-phase and solution-phase reaction mechanisms, atmospheric chemistry, and advanced spectroscopic techniques like velocity map imaging and cavity ring-down spectroscopy. He has pioneered studies on ultrafast reaction dynamics and single aerosol particle analysis.
- Awards and Grants:
- ERC Advanced Grant CAPRI (2012–2017)
- Fellow of the Royal Society (2017)
- Chemical Dynamics Award (2014)
He has supervised over 40 PhD students and led research groups funded by EU Marie Curie programs, Horizon 2020, and the Newton Fund. His lab has hosted postdocs supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and others.
- Service and Collaboration:
- Chair of the 18th International Gas Kinetics Symposium (2004)
- Co-organizer of the Gordon Research Conference on Vibrational Spectroscopy (2018)
- Collaborations with institutions worldwide, including Radboud University Nijmegen, Sandia National Laboratory, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
