Michael Chang

Michael Chang is a Lecturer in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley (2004), where his dissertation became the book Racial Politics in the Era of Transnational Citizenship. His research focuses on the interplay between socio-cultural norms, legal institutions, and the dynamics of individual/group rights and civil liberties. He is also a practicing civil rights attorney enforcing anti-discrimination laws and has taught at law schools as a visiting professor and teaching fellow.

His research interests include Critical Race Theory, Asian American Studies, and the legal implications of transnational citizenship. Notable work examines the 1996 “Asian Donorgate” controversy during the Clinton administration. He teaches courses on race, law, and public policy, such as Politics, Public Policy, and Asian American Communities and Racism and U.S. Law.

Michael has received the Chancellor’s Public Scholar Faculty Fellowship (2021–2022). His scholarship bridges legal frameworks with socio-cultural analysis, emphasizing equity in policy and education.
