Lani Guinier is the Bennett Boskey Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, the first woman of color to hold a tenured position there. Her work focuses on civil rights, democratic decision-making, and educational equity. She authored The Tyranny of the Meritocracy (2015), advocating for systemic reforms in higher education to promote diversity and social mobility.
Guinier has addressed issues of race, gender, and institutional inequality throughout her career. In 1993, she was nominated by President Clinton for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights but faced significant controversy leading to the nomination's withdrawal. She remains a prominent voice in legal and policy debates, including her 2015 lecture at WVU Law on higher education reform.
Her research emphasizes rethinking meritocratic frameworks in academia and public policy to address systemic barriers for marginalized groups.
