Dr. Tatiana Trejos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forensic & Investigative Science at West Virginia University (WVU), with a joint appointment as a Chemistry Adjunct Assistant Professor. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Costa Rica, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Forensic Science and Chemistry from Florida International University (FIU). Dr. Trejos has extensive experience in forensic research, including 11 years managing the Trace Evidence Analysis Facility at FIU’s International Forensic Research Institute (IFRI), and serving as Director of FIU’s Professional Science Master’s in Forensic Sciences.
Education:
- B.S., Chemistry, University of Costa Rica
- M.S., Forensic Science, Florida International University
- Ph.D., Chemistry/Forensic Science, Florida International University
Research Interests: Dr. Trejos focuses on chemical analysis of micro-trace evidence, including glass, paint, documents, and gunshot residues. She develops advanced spectrochemical methods (e.g., LA-ICP-MS, µ-XRF, LIBS) and integrates chemometrics for forensic evidence interpretation. Her work emphasizes probabilistic approaches to trace evidence evaluation and national standards for forensic analyses.
Key Contributions:
- Authored 29 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
- Developed forensic methodologies for trace evidence comparisons.
- Member of NIST OSAC Trace Evidence Subcommittee.
- Recipient of the Clodomiro Picado Twight Award (2015).
- Recipient of Forensic Colleges’ Top 10 Forensic Chemistry Professors distinction (2015).
Grants and Advising: Leads research initiatives in forensic chemistry, including interlaboratory studies and instrument development. Advises graduate students in forensic science and mentors forensic professionals globally through workshops.
Labs and Teams: Directs WVU’s forensic research programs and collaborates with international groups like INTERPOL on trace evidence standards. Her lab specializes in spectrochemical instrumentation and data-driven evidence interpretation.
