Michael Chaness is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Native American Studies program at SUNY Oswego. His work bridges Jewish American and Native American identity formation through interdisciplinary lenses of religion, philosophy, and history. He holds a PhD in Religion from Syracuse University (2016), with prior degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and Syracuse University.
Chaness's research emphasizes collaborative fieldwork with Haudenosaunee communities, particularly through his long-term engagement with the Onondaga Nation School. His teaching spans courses on Native American philosophies, contemporary Indigenous issues, and Haudenosaunee history. He brings extensive experience from teaching at institutions like Syracuse University and Utica College.
His academic contributions focus on decolonial methodologies, intersectional identity studies, and the ethical dimensions of anthropological research. Chaness is dedicated to fostering inclusive educational environments through community partnerships and youth mentorship programs.
