Scott Manning Stevens

Dr. Scott Manning Stevens is an Associate Professor of English at Syracuse University, with courtesy appointments in Art and Music History and Religion. He serves as Director of the Center for Global Indigenous Cultures and Environmental Justice and Director of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Program. His research focuses on Northeast Native American cultures, visual culture, and museum studies, with a particular emphasis on Mohawk heritage.

Research Interests: Dr. Stevens explores intersections between Indigenous knowledge systems and colonial histories, particularly through visual and literary analysis. His work critiques Eurocentric narratives in museums and art collections while advocating for Indigenous sovereignty in cultural representation. Recent projects include studies on Shakespeare from an Indigenous perspective and the role of landscapes in memorial narratives.

Grants & Leadership: He led the Mellon Foundation-funded Institute for Global Indigenous Cultures and Environmental Justice and curated exhibitions on Haudenosaunee art. His service includes roles on boards of the Adirondack Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the American Philosophical Society’s Center for Native American and Indigenous Research.

Awards: Notable recognitions include a Fulbright Scholarship (2021), Radcliffe Institute Fellowship (2021–2022), and Syracuse University’s Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence (2022).
