Professor Michael Brown is Deputy Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast. His research focuses on healthcare access for individuals with intellectual disabilities, including diabetes care, trauma management, mental health legislation, and healthcare transitions for young people. He supervises PhD students in areas like disaster nursing education and nurse turnover during pandemics. Professor Brown holds accolades such as Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing and chairs the Policy and Practice Committee for the International Association of Scientific Study in Intellectual Disabilities.
His research has addressed critical issues including caregiver support programs (Carers-ID), healthcare provider interventions for children's screen time, and pandemic impacts on nursing staff. He has contributed to over 140 publications since 1998, with notable works on qualitative methodologies and healthcare system improvements.
Recent projects include developing best practice guidelines for sexual education in learning disabilities and evaluating interventions to support family carers of individuals with profound intellectual disabilities. Professor Brown actively participates in editorial roles for journals like BMC Nursing and serves on multiple national/international advisory committees.
