Michael Braddick is a Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, University of Oxford since 2024. He specializes in early modern British history, with a focus on the English Revolution, political economy, and longue durée British history. His current projects include a book on England's 1650s and research on the English grain trade's political implications.
Braddick holds a PhD and BA from King’s College, Cambridge (1981-1988). He previously served as Professor of History at the University of Sheffield (2001-2024) after roles at Birmingham Southern College and the University of Alabama. He has held prestigious fellowships including the Wolfson/British Academy Research Professorship and multiple grants from the AHRC and Leverhulme Trust.
His research integrates macro-historical questions with popular political movements, emphasizing comparative revolutionary studies and the material foundations of state formation. Key publications include God’s Fury, England’s Fire (2008) and State Formation in Early Modern England (2000).
Braddick’s awards include the British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Fellowship (2014) and visiting roles at institutions like the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and the Max Planck Institute (Frankfurt). His editorial contributions include the Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History series and Past and Present.
