Dr. Fred Smith is an Early Career Fellow in Early Modern British History at Balliol College, University of Oxford. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he also served as a Junior Research Fellow at Clare College (2019–2021) before joining Balliol. His research focuses on transnational religious history, emphasizing England’s role in shaping European religious reform during the early modern period. His monograph Transnational Catholicism in Tudor England (Oxford, 2022) repositions English Catholicism within continental religious networks and was shortlisted for the Ecclesiastical History Society Book Prize.
Smith’s current research project, Exporting English Reformations, explores England’s influence on religious reforms across Europe. He has published articles on the history of emotions in exile contexts and contributed to exhibitions like the National Portrait Gallery’s The Tudors: Passion, Power and Politics (2022). He teaches early modern British and European history at Oxford, covering topics from the late medieval period to the Age of Revolutions.
Awarded the Ecclesiastical History Society Book Prize shortlist (2022) and engaged in public history through media contributions and academic consulting, Smith bridges scholarly research with accessible historical interpretation.
