Michael B. Sponsler is a Professor of Chemistry at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology (1987) and a B.S. from Bowling Green State University (1982). His research focuses on molecular electronics, holographic materials, and conductive polymers, particularly exploring organometallic complexes as molecular wires and electrically switchable holograms. He has led multiple NSF-funded research initiatives, including REU programs and studies on polyacetylene superconductivity. Notable awards include membership in Phi Kappa Phi since 1982.
Teaching responsibilities include courses in organic chemistry, chemical research methods, and forensic science. He advises undergraduate and graduate research projects, including honors capstone work. Sponsler has directed curricular programs in forensic science and national security sciences, serving as director of the Integrated Learning Major in Forensic Science (2010–2024) and the Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute's curricular programs (2011–2024).
