Mathew M. Maye is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Chemistry at Syracuse University, affiliated with the Biochemistry program within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on nanomaterials synthesis, biomimetic systems, and energy applications. He earned his Ph.D. and B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Binghamton in 2005 and 2001, respectively.
Research Interests:
- Design of alloyed nanoparticles with steel-like properties
- Quantum dot-based sensors using halide exchange
- Bio-nano conjugates for energy transfer (e.g., bioluminescence resonance energy transfer)
- DNA-programmed self-assembly for smart drug delivery
Grants and Collaborations:
- Lead PI on NSF-funded REU Site program (2017-2021)
- DOE-funded project on alloyed nanoparticles (2024-2025)
Teaching:
- Primary instructor for Inorganic Chemistry (CHE 411/611)
- Mentors students in CHE 450 Introduction to Chemical Research

- Maye Lab develops patented technologies including rust-resistant nanosteel and colorimetric sensors
