William T Pennington Jr. is the Alumni Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Clemson University, where he has worked for over 30 years. He previously worked in industry at Molecular Structure Corporation.
- B.A. in Chemistry, Hendrix College, 1977
- Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry, University of Arkansas, 1983
- Postdoctoral work at the University of Illinois with Iain Paul and David Curtin
Research interests include
- Halogen Bonding and Crystal Design for molecular interactions
- Deep Eutectic Solvents as green chemistry solvents
- Polymorphism in material properties
- X-ray Crystallography for structural analysis

- Philip H. Prince Award for Innovative Teaching (2009)
- Class of 1939 Award for Faculty Excellence (2008)

Advising and Grants: Directed the NSF/REU Summer Undergraduate Research Program (1996-2002; 2016-present) and the EUREKA! program (2006-2017). Served on international advisory boards for HALCHEM and X-Bonding symposia.
Professional Memberships: American Chemical Society, American Crystallographic Association, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, and South Carolina Academy of Sciences.
