Michael B. McElroy is the Gilbert Butler Professor of Environmental Studies at Harvard University’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). His research focuses on climate science, atmospheric chemistry, and environmental policy, with a particular emphasis on global climate dynamics and their societal impacts. He leads projects addressing air quality, dust cycle modulation, and extreme weather prediction in regions like China.
Recent work includes groundbreaking studies on Arctic warming’s effects on global dust patterns and the development of early warning systems for heat and ozone extremes in China. These efforts underscore his commitment to linking scientific discovery with actionable environmental strategies.
McElroy was awarded the prestigious William Bowie Medal (2024), the highest honor of the American Geophysical Union, recognizing his transformative contributions to Earth science. His research is supported by interdisciplinary collaborations and has informed policy frameworks for climate mitigation and adaptation.
