Yutian Wu is a Lamont Associate Research Professor at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), where she conducts research in Ocean and Climate Physics. She also serves as a Lecturer in the M.S. in Sustainability Science Program. Her academic journey began with a B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China, followed by a Ph.D. in Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics from Columbia University in 2011. Prior to returning to Columbia in 2017, she was an Assistant Professor at Purdue University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at New York University's Courant Institute.

Dr. Wu's research focuses on climate dynamics, particularly the connections between Arctic climate changes and mid-latitude weather patterns. Her work examines how Arctic sea ice loss influences extreme weather events, atmospheric transport processes, and the Asian summer monsoon system. She employs both observational data and climate models to investigate these complex interactions.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on Arctic-midlatitude linkages, with particular attention to how sea ice decline affects atmospheric circulation patterns that can lead to extreme weather events across North America and Eurasia. The research shows increasing sophistication in modeling approaches, with recent work incorporating high-resolution modeling to better capture processes like tropopause folding and stratospheric ozone intrusions.
