Michael A. Neblo is a Professor of Political Science at The Ohio State University, with courtesy appointments in Philosophy, Communication, and Public Policy. He serves as Director of the Institute for Democratic Engagement and Accountability (IDEA) and leads the Connecting to Congress initiative. Neblo holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and a BA from Northwestern University in Philosophy and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences.
His research focuses on deliberative democracy and political psychology, emphasizing mechanisms for improving representative governance. Notable works include Politics with the People: Building a Directly Representative Democracy (2018) and Deliberative Democracy between Theory and Practice (2015). He has pioneered experimental studies on deliberative town halls involving U.S. Congress members, demonstrating pathways for enhanced citizen-politician communication.
Neblo has received prestigious awards from the Carnegie Corporation, Democracy Fund, and National Science Foundation. His work spans Congressional reform, political emotions, race politics, and health policy, with interdisciplinary engagement in technology and the arts. He teaches courses on political theory, Habermasian philosophy, and deliberative systems design.
His grants include a major NSF project on deliberative town halls and an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship (2020–2022). Neblo’s research bridges normative democratic theory with empirical practice, advancing translational science for democratic innovation.
