Micha Germann is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Comparative Politics at the University of Bath's Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies. He holds a PhD in Political Science from ETH Zurich (2017) and previously held postdoctoral roles at the University of Leuven and the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on political conflict—including ethno-nationalist mobilization, civil war, and terrorism—and democratic innovations such as deliberative mini-publics, internet voting, and voting advice applications (VAAs). His work has been published in journals like International Organization, British Journal of Political Science, and Political Communication.
Key research streams include: (1) the escalation of self-determination conflicts due to ethnic rights restrictions and (2) the impact of digital tools on democratic quality. He has led grants funded by the ESRC, British Academy, and Swiss National Science Foundation. Notable datasets include SDM (self-determination movements) and Contested Sovereignty (referendum analysis).
His outreach includes co-developing widely used VAAs like WhoGetsMyVote, accessed by over 150,000 voters. Awards include the ESRC New Investigator Grant (£303k) and a Penn Postdoctoral Fellowship. Current projects explore Islamist terrorism's political effects and the causal impacts of nonviolent repression on conflict escalation.
Teaching focuses on comparative politics, conflict theory, and research methods. He coordinates the Departmental Research Seminar and serves on the editorial board of the E-Vote-ID conference. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and peace.
