Professor Mianna Meskus is a Research Professor of Sociology at Tampere University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, directing the Tampere Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (TaSTI). She holds a PhD from the University of Helsinki (2009) and has held visiting fellowships at the London School of Economics, King’s College London, and the University of Cambridge.
Her research focuses on the sociotechnical governance of life through biomedicine and biotechnology, including studies on reproductive technologies (IVF, genetic testing), aging, stem cell research, and speculative futures. Key projects include the VALDA project on valuations of life and the Reproductive Futures initiative exploring fertility and ecological disruption.
Meskus has authored books such as Craft in Biomedical Research (2018) and co-edited Muokattu elämä (2014). Her work bridges sociology, science studies, and feminist theory, emphasizing ethical implications of biomedical advancements. She has received national awards for her PhD research and actively disseminates findings through public lectures and media engagement.
Current research explores speculative methodologies, aging in the Anthropocene, and the role of patients in knowledge production. She supervises PhD students in topics like genome editing, IVF ethics, and womblessness. Meskus co-founded the Finnish Reproductive Studies Network (FiReSNet) to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on reproduction’s sociopolitical dimensions.
