Mette Hartlev is a Professor of Health Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, and Head of the WELMA - Centre for Legal Studies in Welfare and Market. She serves as Head of International Strategy at the Faculty of Law and participates in interdisciplinary research projects including PolicyAid, Me In We, and EUSTANDS4PM.
Her educational background includes an LL.M from Aarhus University (1986), a PhD in Law from Copenhagen University (1993), and an LL.D from Copenhagen University (2006).
Mette Hartlev's research focuses on legal issues related to healthcare services, patients' rights, and new health technologies such as gene technology. Her work particularly addresses health law and patients' rights in an integrated Europe, legal aspects of public health issues, health and human rights, biolaw and biotechnology, and law, science and technology studies. Her scholarship examines regulatory strategies for implementing emerging technologies in healthcare and patients' right to health in Europe.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on European health law, patient rights across jurisdictions, obesity policy from a human rights perspective, and the interplay between Nordic legal traditions and EU integration. Her work spans comparative analysis of health law frameworks, examination of patient mobility within the EU, and ethical considerations in biotechnology regulation.
Mette Hartlev serves on the editorial board of the European Journal of Health Law and the editorial council of Etikk i praksis (Ethics in Practice), and previously served on the editorial board of the Nordic legal journal Retfærd.
She has extensive experience in research leadership, having headed the WELMA research center since 2012 and served as Head of Studies at the Faculty of Law from 2006-2011. She participates in numerous research projects including The Genomic History of Denmark, Governing Obesity, and COST Aktion ADAPT on adapting European health systems to diversity.
Mette Hartlev is actively involved in policy-relevant work, serving as Chair of the Management Board of the Danish Anti Doping Agency since 2013 and as Member and Vice Chair of the Danish National Committee on Health Research Ethics since 2012.
