Dr. Mervyn Thomas is a Clinical Associate Professor, Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist, and Clinical Lead of the Ulverscroft Eye Unit at the University of Leicester. He holds a medical degree (2013), an iBSc, and a PhD, having completed intercalated research years. His academic training includes NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and NIHR Clinical Lecturer roles, funded through the NIHR Integrated Academic Training (IAT) programme.
His research focuses on translational ophthalmology, including foveal hypoplasia grading, albinism genetics, and retinal development. He leads studies using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and zebrafish models to explore ocular and cognitive disorders. He supervises academic doctors, orthoptists, and students, and his work has earned multiple awards, including the Wolfson Prize and Alcon Research Prize.
He chairs the EY section and serves on the ARVO Program Committee. He advises the Nystagmus Network and Global Albinism Alliance Scientific Committee. His lab’s recent work includes developing grading systems for foveal hypoplasia and advancing OCT-based diagnostics for craniosynostosis and retinoblastoma.
