Mervyn J. Monteiro is a Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine with primary appointment in Neurobiology and secondary appointments in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Neurology. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, particularly ALS/FTD and Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Monteiro received his BSc with 1st class honors in Microbiology from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London in 1979, followed by a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the MRC National Institute for Medical Research in 1983. He completed postdoctoral training at the same institution from 1983-1986, then moved to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for additional postdoctoral studies from 1986-1989.

Dr. Monteiro's research primarily focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, with special emphasis on ALS/FTD and Alzheimer's disease. His laboratory investigates how UBQLN2 mutations cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and how PSEN1 mutations cause early-onset Alzheimer's disease. He has developed transgenic mouse models for both conditions to study disease mechanisms and test potential therapies. His work centers on protein misfolding, ubiquilin function, proteasome activity, and autophagy pathways in neurodegeneration.
Analysis of Dr. Monteiro's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the role of UBQLN2 in ALS/FTD pathogenesis. His research demonstrates how mutations in this protein disrupt critical cellular processes including protein degradation, mitochondrial function, and autophagy. More recently, his work has expanded to Alzheimer's disease research, particularly studying PSEN1 mutations. The consistent theme across his publications is understanding how protein homeostasis failure leads to neurodegeneration.
Dr. Monteiro has made significant contributions to understanding the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly through his work on ubiquilin proteins and their role in ALS/FTD and Alzheimer's disease. At the University of Maryland, Dr. Monteiro has progressed through the academic ranks from Assistant Professor (1989-1996) to Associate Professor (1996-2002) and then to Professor (2002-present). When the Medical Biotechnology Center was incorporated into the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2010, he continued his research in the School of Medicine. His laboratory employs a combination of cell biology, biochemical, and molecular genetic approaches, together with mammalian cell and mouse models, to investigate the causes of neurodegenerative diseases and develop potential cures.
