Merilyn Varghese, MD, MSc, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine) at the Yale School of Medicine. She serves as the Medical Director for Cardiac Rehab and Primary Prevention at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven. Her clinical practice focuses on non-invasive cardiology, emphasizing prevention and lifestyle interventions for cardiovascular disease. Dr. Varghese holds a MD from Stony Brook School of Medicine (2015), completed her internal medicine residency at Yale (2018–2019, serving as Chief Resident), and pursued cardiology fellowship and research training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (2022–2023). She also earned an MSc in Epidemiology from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2023).
Research Interests: Dr. Varghese investigates strategies to improve cardiovascular outcomes in veterans, particularly addressing sex-based disparities in cardiac rehabilitation participation and efficacy. Her work aims to enhance long-term health through tailored interventions targeting lifestyle changes, behavioral therapy, and engagement strategies for underserved populations. Recent projects focus on women veterans’ higher cardiovascular disease risks compared to civilian populations.
