Meredith K Hastings is the George Ide Chase Professor of Physical Sciences, Professor of Environment and Society, and Chair of the Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences Department at Brown University. Her research focuses on the global nitrogen cycle, atmospheric chemistry, and climate interactions, leveraging isotopic analysis to trace nitrogen sources and transformations. She leads collaborative projects on nitrogen deposition, ice core records, and urban air pollution, with funding from NOAA and the NSF. Her honors include the NSF CAREER Award and the American Geophysical Union Ascent Award.
Education: B.Sc. in Marine Science & Chemistry (University of Miami, 1998), Ph.D. in Geosciences (Princeton University, 2004). Postdoctoral work at the University of Washington. Current advising includes graduate students like Sydney Clark and postdocs such as David Miller. Teaching spans climate science, environmental policy, and geochemistry courses.
Research emphasizes nitrogen's role in air quality, acid deposition, and climate feedbacks. Key projects include isotopic analysis of biomass burning emissions and Arctic nitrogen fluxes. Awards highlight her contributions to advancing environmental science and fostering inclusive geoscience practices. She co-founded the Earth Science Women's Network and chairs NSF-funded initiatives on nitrogen cycling and field safety training.
