Professor Menno van Zelm is a leading immunologist at Monash University, heading the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Laboratory in the Department of Immunology and Pathology. His research focuses on B cell development, primary immunodeficiencies, and vaccine responses, with a particular emphasis on antibody deficiencies and allergy mechanisms. He holds honorary positions at Erasmus MC in the Netherlands and has been a key contributor to the establishment of the Jeffrey Modell Center in Melbourne.
Education:
- PhD from Erasmus MC, Rotterdam (2005), studying 'B cell development and primary antibody deficiencies.'
- Postdoctoral research at UCSD (2005-2007) and Erasmus MC (2008-2013).
Research Interests: B cell biology, immunodeficiency genetics, vaccine immunity, and allergy diagnostics. His work integrates clinical translation, with studies involving human samples to address patient care challenges, such as improving allergy immunotherapy and understanding SARS-CoV-2 immunity in immunocompromised individuals.
Projects & Awards:
- Recipient of the Heineken Young Scientists Award (2010) and Veni Fellowship (NWO).
- Active in collaborative projects including 'PROPHECY' (profiling SARS-CoV-2 responses in high-risk populations) and 'Jeffrey Modell Center' initiatives.
- Editorial roles at PLoS One, Frontiers in Immunology, and chairs the IUIS Nomenclature Committee.
Labs & Teams: Leads the van Zelm Lab at Monash, focusing on B cell immunology and translational research. Collaborates globally on immunodeficiency and allergy projects.
