Prof. Melvyn A. Goodale is a Distinguished University Professor at Western University, holding dual appointments in the Department of Psychology and Physiology and Pharmacology. He is the Canada Research Chair in Visual Neuroscience and Founding Director of the Brain and Mind Institute. His research focuses on visual neuroscience, particularly the 'duplex' theory of visual processing, distinguishing perceptual and action-based visual systems. He has held positions at Oxford University and the University of St. Andrews before returning to Western. His work has been recognized through prestigious awards, including the D.O. Hebb Award and Hellmuth Prize for Research.
Education: PhD in Psychology from Western University, postdoctoral training at Oxford under Prof. Larry Weiskrantz. He has contributed to neuroscience education, receiving the E.G. Pleva Award for teaching excellence.
Research interests include visual perception, action-guided vision, blindsight, and echolocation. He has led neuroimaging and psychophysical studies on the two-visual-systems hypothesis, influencing textbooks in vision and cognitive neuroscience. His grants include funding from NSERC, CFI, and the Canada First Research Excellence Fund.
Awards: Fellowships with the Royal Society of Canada, Royal Society (UK), and Royal Society of Biology (UK). He co-founded the Program in Brain, Mind and Consciousness for CIFAR. His lab explores visual processing deficits in neurological patients and AI implications of human visual biases.
