Melody Brown Burkins is an Adjunct Professor of Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College and Director of the Institute of Arctic Studies. She serves as Senior Associate Director at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding and holds the UArctic Chair in Science Diplomacy and Inclusion. Her work bridges polar science, governance, and international relations with a focus on sustainability and inclusion.
Education: Ph.D. and M.S. from Dartmouth College, B.S. from Yale University.
Research interests include Arctic science diplomacy, science policy, gender inclusion in STEM, and sustainable development goals. She advocates for policy-engaged scholarship and experiential education to address global environmental challenges.
Recent publications address climate action failures, higher education transformation for sustainability, and Arctic climate change through community dialogue. She actively participates in international initiatives like the UNESCO Global Expert Group and the International Science Council.
Key roles include steering committees for Arctic research planning, governance bodies for science diplomacy, and advisory roles for global disaster risk reduction and gender inclusion initiatives.
