Kamrul Hossain is a Research Professor and Director of the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM) at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland. He also holds an Adjunct Professorship in Public International Law at the same institution and leads the University of the Arctic's Thematic Network on Arctic Law.
His research spans international environmental law and human rights law, with a focus on indigenous peoples' rights in the Arctic. He has contributed to Arctic governance topics including climate change, biodiversity, maritime security, and geopolitical dynamics from legal and policy perspectives. He has served as Principal Investigator for grants funded by the Academy of Finland, NordForsk, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the Finnish National Agency for Education.
Hossain has held visiting roles at prestigious institutions globally, including:
- Visiting Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, China
- Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia
- Visiting Scholar at the University of Toronto, Canada; Hokkaido University and Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan; and the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, UK
He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Law and Policy, serves on the editorial boards of over ten international journals, and has acted as Special Editor for the Yearbook of Polar Law. His work bridges the Arctic and the Third Pole through initiatives like the Inter-Polar Conference and the Cryosphere Link project.
As leader of the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Law and member of the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic in Asia and Asia in the Arctic, he actively collaborates across institutions and disciplines to advance legal research and education in polar and high-altitude regions.
