Dr. Melissa Merritt is a Senior Research Fellow and Co-Lead of the Ovarian Cancer research stream at the Daffodil Centre, a joint venture between Cancer Council NSW and the University of Sydney. Her work focuses on molecular epidemiology of gynaecological cancers, particularly ovarian and endometrial cancers. She holds a PhD from The University of Queensland and a BSc (Hons) from James Cook University.
Research Interests: Her research integrates molecular epidemiology, biomarkers of disease risk, and disparities research. Current projects include evaluating NSAID use in ovarian cancer survival, biological pathways linking risk factors to cancer, and racial disparities in cancer risk. She collaborates internationally with institutions in Japan, the UK, and the US.
Awards: Awarded the US Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Academy Early Career Investigator Award (2021) and recognized in Nature’s 'World at Their Feet' list (2018).
Teaching: Course coordinator for PUBH5019 Cancer Prevention and Control at the University of Sydney. Previously taught epidemiology at Harvard University and Imperial College London.
Grants: Includes funding from Cancer Council NSW and the US Department of Defense for studies on ovarian cancer prognosis and prevention strategies.
International Links: Collaborates with the Japan National Cancer Center, Imperial College London, and the Moffitt Cancer Center on cohort studies and risk factor analysis.
