Anne Cust

Professor Anne Cust is a leading academic in cancer epidemiology, serving as Interim Director of the Daffodil Centre (a joint initiative between Cancer Council NSW and the University of Sydney) and Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health. She is also a faculty member at the Melanoma Institute Australia and holds an NHMRC Investigator Grant. Her research focuses on melanoma and skin cancer prevention, genomic risk assessment, and translational research.

Her work integrates genetic and environmental factors to improve risk prediction for melanoma, with contributions to clinical guidelines such as the RACGP Red Book and melanoma survival studies. She leads national initiatives like the Roadmap for Targeted Skin Cancer Screening (2024–28) and chairs key committees including the Cancer Council National Skin Cancer Committee.

Research Interests: Melanoma prevention, genomic risk stratification, cancer risk modeling, and interdisciplinary collaboration to translate research into policy. Her projects include the MEL-SELF trial on patient-led surveillance and the InterMEL consortium studying melanoma survival.

Awards: Includes the 2015 Sax Institute Research Action Award and 2018 NSW Premier’s Award for Cancer Research. She has over 270 publications and supervised 12 postgraduate students.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Daffodil Centre’s melanoma and skin cancer research streams, collaborating internationally with institutions like the International Agency for Research on Cancer (France) and the University of Leeds (UK).
