Melissa Eblen-Zayas is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Carleton College, where she has been teaching since 2005. She holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Minnesota. Her research spans experimental condensed matter physics and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), focusing on inclusive pedagogy, advanced laboratory instruction, and equitable educational practices. She led the development of the Carleton Undergraduate Bridge Experience (CUBE) and currently directs an NSF-funded LACOL consortium project examining quantitative skill support strategies.
Her professional service includes serving as Director of the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching (2016–2020), chairing the Physics and Astronomy department, and coordinating undergraduate research programs. She teaches courses like PHYS 228 (Atomic and Nuclear Physics) and supervises directed research projects (PHYS 394).
Eblen-Zayas actively contributes to organizations such as the American Physical Society (APS) and the POD Network. Her recent work emphasizes metacognitive strategies, universal design for learning, and addressing systemic barriers in higher education through collaborative, evidence-based approaches.
