Melissa Barden Dowling is an Associate Professor and Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where she also serves as Department Chair and Director of Classical Studies. Her work focuses on Roman Imperial society, Egyptian religious practices, and the cultural and political dimensions of time in antiquity.

Research Interests: Dowling examines how Romans navigated transitions in governance and religion, particularly the rise of Imperial Rome and the integration of Egyptian cults like Isis into Roman culture. She explores concepts of time, eternity, and mercy (clemency) in political and religious contexts. Her current projects include studies on the Isis cult’s symbolism and the cultural shifts reflected in Roman temporal ideologies.
