Dr. Mareile Haase is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto, where she also serves as Program Director for the Classical Civilization Program. She holds academic training from institutions in Germany and Rome, with graduate and postdoctoral fellowships at Oxford and the German Archaeological Institute. Her teaching spans institutions including the University of Tübingen, Giessen, Erfurt, and Toronto, focusing on Classical Archaeology and Ancient Mediterranean Religious History.
Research Interests:
- Etruscan religious ritual and afterlife concepts
- Egyptian gods' cults in Roman imperial provinces
- Material religion and symbolic communication
- Social status of necropolis workers in Roman/Early Christian Egypt
- Iconoclasm and religious violence in Late Antiquity
Dr. Haase's publications include analyses of Hypatia of Alexandria, Etruscan sacrifice iconography, and Isis cults in Germania, with methodological focus on textual analysis and material culture. She has held Visiting Research Fellowships at the Collège de France and Käte Hamburger Kolleg Bochum, and co-edited Archiv für Religionsgeschichte research surveys.
